Your home is the place you can go to get away from the rest of the world. It's where you spend time with your family and where you can retire after a long day. Unfortunately, burglars and other potential intruders can compromise the sanctity of your home. Here are four ways you can keep your home safe from intruders:
1. Always lock your doors.
It can be tempting to leave your doors unlocked, especially if you live in a relatively safe neighborhood and have family members coming in and out all day. However, leaving your door unlocked, even while you're home, is a potential hazard. You don't want an intruder to pay you a surprise visit, so get in the habit of locking your doors at all times. If you like to keep your main door open for ventilation, install a deadbolt or latch on your screen door for extra security.
2. Close your windows at night.
This can be a tricky one, especially in the hot summer months when you want to keep the windows open for all the extra air you can get. However, it's easy for burglars to slip into windows undetected. If you live on the bottom floor, it's best to keep your windows closed when you're asleep. You can invest in a fan or air conditioner if it's too hot.
3. Invest in a security system.
A security system can bring you incredible peace of mind. You'll be able to arm it at night before you go to bed and in the morning before you leave for work. If any intruders are detected, your security system will alert you and also call the local police department. It will also sound an alarm that will hopefully scare off the burglar and alert your neighbors. Many modern security systems are even compatible with apps, so you'll be able to check on your house from your phone. You'll never have to wonder if you remembered to lock the door again, since you will be able to check using your handy app.
4. Get someone to house sit.
Burglary is often a crime of opportunity. Typically, burglars try to rob homes that are unoccupied, since they have the greatest chance of getting away with their crime. When you go on vacation, your empty house is a waiting target. Ask one of your friends or family members to house sit for you as a precautionary measure. By bringing in your mail and turning on the lights at night, your house sitter will signal to burglars that your home is off-limits.
