Need New Locks and Keys as Your Teens Get Older and Leave for College? Get New Main Door Locks and Keys

by Louise Gomez

As your kids get older and start to leave for college or move out of the house, and you are traveling for work or leisure still, it's important to think about the security of your home and to ensure that the kids always have a way inside the house. There are some different things to take into consideration, and ways that you can monitor what is going on at your property.

It's time to make sure that the house is protected and locked properly since it will be empty a lot. Consider the following.

Main Door Keys

Although having a keypad on your garage is the simple way to keep the door shut at all times, there will be times that the door isn't accessible. This is not a reliable way to ensure your kids have access to your home.

If the power is out, you also won't be able to get the garage door shut. Another potential problem arises if a cable breaks or another part isn't working. Make sure that you get multiple keys to the main door on the outside of the home.

You also may want to lock the door that goes from the house to the garage, and if it has a deadbolt you will have to get keys for this door as well. Order all the extra keys and give each child the copies they need. You may also want to hide a set around the property and consider giving one to a neighbor or friend you are close with just in case.

Electronic Monitoring System

Some of the things to consider are electronic door monitoring systems, that notify you when people open the entrance doors of the house, and that have cameras that can see who is coming in and out. This way you are alerted if someone is coming in and out at odd times of the day or without permission.

A camera system is another great consideration because you can see when packages are dropped off, if someone tries to steal your packages, and if a trespasser is looking in your doors.

It's important to make sure your kids can get in and out, but you want to change all the locks when they move out and get everyone new sets of keys. This ensures that only you and they have the keys to your house that are needed to get through the main doors. If you're in need of new keys, it might be helpful to look for a replacement keys supply.

Do you have an outbuilding, shed or garage that you use to store things in? Do you put those expensive inflatable decorations out in your lawn each holiday? There are probably several things outside of your home that warrant protection as much as the things that you keep inside of your home. This blog will show you the security measures that you can take to ensure that everything on your property is protected as best as it can be.
